Building a professional business website requires teamwork today. Designers and developers working together. Much of our work is building 100% custom WordPress themes from an existing HTML site or Photoshop file, created by a qualified graphic designer. This means you get both the expert look and branding, together with expert coding to provide the needed features and engagement, as well as ensuring the site is really fast and gets ranked well in Google.
But some people starting out have limited funds and prefer to do more themselves, purchasing a premium pre-built theme online where much of the upfront ‘design’ is already done, for a modest cost. This is also fine by us and we’re available to help out if needed or you get into trouble.

Firstly, try to avoid the thousands of free WordPress themes available online. Free always carries a risk in performance, support and security. Instead, start with the commercial theme list on WordPress http://wordpress.org/themes/commercial/ These themes may include controls that allow you to change headers, colours and more widget areas on the home page to help display content better.

Usually the choice depends largely upon the style as well as how much control you want over the appearance. I personally love Studiopress, often as a starter visual than the final look. It’s the easiest theme for me to customise or re-code later into something totally different if needed. Studiopress themes are well regarded, with a huge developer and support community worldwide. Although the initial purchase and setup cost is a little higher than others, it’s a safer, lower risk option for businesses large and small.
