WordPress Plugins for Community Sites

There’s thousands of plugins for WordPress which is both good and bad. Good because there are that many, but bad because the risk of selecting a bad one is very high. We’ve tested and used hundreds over the years and around 90% of them we’ve eventually discarded and trashed. Many of them (162) were premium ones as well! The reasons are many and varied why most didn’t make the grade.

But plugins that add advanced features to WordPress is a lot like buying clothes or a new pair of shoes. It has to fit us and match what we do, not some generic features a developer on the other side of the planet though we’d like, without ever meeting us….

Community focus

This section will summarise the plugins useful for community websites, be it for membership, sports teams, directories, job boards, forums etc. We will avoid the general ones around backup, webforms, SEO etc which are well known and tend to be promoted well on WordPress and countless forums. Our focus will be on the more high functioning plugins that have a real job to do for community-based websites.

We will add new ones each month and discuss what we think is good and bad and if worth a look. Note this is not just our opinion, but a accumulation of feedback and thoughts from other WordPress gurus like us. In the meantime, as we build up this listing, if you have an immediate need, fill in your details below.
