WordPress SEO

Website traffic – Everyone always wants more….

We’re probably the top local guy when it comes to WordPress SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). Our meetup group discussions around SEO are always the best attended. Why? Well, when most people setup their new WordPress [or any other] site, the expectation is that traffic will just turn up.

Many believe just submitting their site to Google and perhaps adding an SEO plugin with keywords, is all that’s needed to get good search traffic. lotto-ballsNo, it doesn’t work this way now… Like a lotto ticket purchase, doing this just means you’re in with a chance. Sadly most business websites today get little traffic, with many effectively broken or incomplete as far as Google is concerned…

Are Web Designer-Developers ripping us off?

Web designer-developers are often part of the problem, not following Googles webmaster guidelines. SEO colleague Jim Stewart from Melbourne mentioned this in one of his weekly podcasts.  As Jim noted, it’s sometimes more cost-effective to start again with some poorly coded websites, using WordPress as the replacement platform, or at least adding a separate WordPress company blogsite to bring in traffic…

Unfortunately, Most Designers-Developers Don’t Understand Google

As Jim said, most web designers and developers (perhaps 80%) simply don’t understand or even care how Google looks at the websites they create. All effort [and budget] goes into making the site ‘pretty’, like those old 80s brochures. The visual appearance is what has been purchased here, little else. It’s only after the site is live for 6 months with little traffic arriving, that the site owner realises something has gone horribly wrong. They’ve been sold a lemon. Maybe it’s not done deliberately, but just through ignorance of how Google works

N.B. It’s seldom realised that even WordPress can be broken for SEO. We’ve come across WordPress sites that Google won’t send traffic to. Bad theme coding, bad plugins, even bad hosting can wreak havoc.
