The best testing site is webpagetest. (Note Googles own site speed tools are woefully inadequate and misleading). An initial load time of under 5 seconds and a speedindex figure of under 3000 is the ideal. Anything greater than this is adversely affecting your site traffic, visitor engagement and your Google search ranking. We wrote about this in an earlier blog article. Note it’s not just site design, theme or content causing the problem, but often the cheap and nasty host you’ve chosen.

A typical industry example of how bad is can get is www.palmers.co.nz taking up to 18 seconds to display. Over 40 seconds on most mobiles. Sadly it’s been like this for over 2 years.
